Session Descriptions

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Session
Navigating Privilege: When to Step Up or Sit Back
(Raven Chitalo, LLL USA Equity Advocate and Hannah McKenzie) This hands-on workshop will explore opportunities to be an advocate for diversity and inclusion while also leaving space to listen, learn and follow.

Session 1
A: Rights of Working Parents (Norma Escobar, IBCLC) Explore the current laws protecting nursing parents in the workplace as well as the NC licensed daycare regulations for breastfeeding families. Tips will be given for creative work-arounds in challenging environments to sustain the breastfeeding relationship and help parents reach their goals.
B: Tough Talks (Cicely Rodal, LLLI Communication Skills Instructor) Using sample scenarios from recent administrative changes in La Leche League, participants will explore healthy techniques to collaboratively navigate conversations with co-Leaders during this time of change.

Session 2
A: Let’s Get Social (Jameil Weldon, LLL USA Social Media Team and degrees in mass media and communications) We’ll cover the ins and outs of social media best practices. Learn the LLL USA guidelines and how to make the most of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. We’ll include a segment on hosting online meetings with Raven Chitalo!
B: Disaster Planning: Infant and Young Child Feeding (Norma Escobar, IBCLC) As recent events have shown, in a disaster or emergency, the needs of some of the most vulnerable citizens, our infants and children, are often overlooked in our responses. Discover ways to help families prepare and overcome barriers to optimal feeding and how to combat common misconceptions that can lead to disruption of breastfeeding practices during these time of crisis.

Session 3
A: Applicant to Leader (Christina Hongach and Diane Beckman, LLLI Leader Accreditation Department) Learn useful tips to go from applicant to leader including best practices for consistent communication, the path to leadership, and how to use the accreditation tools. We will also cover where and when the money goes.
B: Trauma-Informed Support (Laura Evans, Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Substance Abuse Counselor) A discussion of trauma, the potential impact on the breastfeeding parent, and practical ways to provide trauma-informed care as a Leader.
